6 very important things to put in mind before starting the gym.

Along the famous, ever busy ,ever noisy Lamu road along with my mom i saw this eye catching gym sign board oooOW! remember that sound Sponge Bob SquarePants gives when his grandma miss Margret SquarePants comes to visit him in his pineapple house & the eyes he display?

Yes! Those are the eyes am talking about, I mean this sign board was just so eye catching, my my attention was all their, ‘Mama, I wanna lift’ she never argues can say the love was strong being the only kid then.

So we branched to the gym I had a little idea on exercising since I am a rugby athlete for 6 years then but I had never been into a professional gym like this one. I was not yet in but from the exterior you could tell the interior, that it was a prestigious 1st class gym.

You see best feelings arise when you are getting into a relationship with new people that’s how things were similar at the gym, I felt it as mama was talking to Haron Otieno the gym instructor, I talk a short walk to see everything the small & big dumbbells, I knew then that the “heavy metal bar” as I used to refer to it, it was actually called a barbell. I was from a local gym where such terms weren’t of much importance.

A friendly and motivative voice called my name, it was the instructor, he briefed me on the way things ran & I got to choose my training times and days. I just never took myself as a beginner which was not good at all, I think I related my rugby physical training to the gym training I was now engaging my self in.

Later it came to my senses that there are things I ignored at the beginning, I know i cannot redo my actions but I can help you be aware of these 6 essentials to have before starting training.

Below are 6 things to be aware of before you start training:

1.THE GYM

Am referring to the gym that you want to start training in. These is a key thing to observe, go to the gym a week before you by any training packages, make a secret survey, walk around the gym read it’s hygiene by looking at the set up, how benches are spaced, arrangement of dumbbells, do they have resistance band all am trying to say is does it have the necessary equipment’s to meet you training goal? Is the instructor a person you can stand, I mean is he friendly? of cos they should be but not all and does the instructor qualify to do that job? this is too make sure your goal isn’t ruined.

2. Never do it ALONE

You see, you should never be alone! that’s why we got life partners at home , we got relatives & friends everywhere, we got the Most High all the time with us. Now just like that, have a gym partner during training. I know you are thinking of the gym instructor/trainer most of the time they will focus on giving you the exercise to do and the correct form but for better psyche at the gym have a friend who will be your training partner, this will help you rest well in between sets, explore more exercises among other benefits, like its hard to feel tired while training with a partner compared to training alone.

3. Don’t just do it at the gym and leave it their.

Most of us do proper training, follow a good routine, being strict on your diet and other stuff and we forget that we need to follow up our results after each day f training. We need to know how much calories we burn/gain per training session, with apps like MY FITNESS PAL, MY DIET COACH there are many other apps that make you count your calorie intake. This is to know if you are moving towards your goal or not, no wonder in school we have trial examinations, right?

You might also want to join some social media fitness groups like Doctors & fitness and like some pages also subscribe to popular fitness YouTube channels like am a subscriber at EVOGEN NUTRITION this will boost your motivation & will aid you to work towards your specific training goal.

4.Pay a bigger attention to your diet than your training.

It is very know that YOU CAN’T OUT-EXERCISE A BAD DIET. If you have been training & still can’t meet your training goal then yes! You are that kind of person, the person that minds training more than diet.

SOULFUL HEALTHY LIVING: DIET versus EXERCISE

It is proven that 80% diet & 20 % training works perfectly and you get to reach your goal 60% fast than the reverse of it.

If your aim at the gym is to gain mass then you should add more of proteins to your diet, yes they are body building food, but how do they build this body? Proteins contain calories which are supplied to the muscle for growth. More calories more growth in mass. Have at least 4 meal at day, plan them well, have big meals and small meals with snacks in-between. Don’t forget to lower your carb intake.

If you train for weight loss then it will be wise to eat less protein, stop taking junk food {(pizza, burgers, chips) we all have have that bad habit then have at least 2 day in the week where you will be eating this type of food and soda} Instead do more of carbs and salads, have less meals in between the day, i won’t advice you to starve yourself because you will be losing weight the unhealthy way

5.Having a plan.

Nobody starts anything without a plan, not just a plan but a proper working plan. In the gym you will need a plan a good gym plan will contain the following.

  • Days of training.
  • The muscle group you are to train each day.
  • The number of sets & reps per exercise.
  • Rest duration between exercises.
  • The days you take rest.
  • How many calories you are going to be consuming/ burning per day.
  • When to eat clean & days to eat junk.

With such a plan you will be organised from time to the end goal result.

6. Proper accessories

You will need to have some accessories, yes you need, you don’t want to look soo old fashioned.

A list of accessories you may need;

  1. A gym bag.
  2. A water bottle.
  3. A gym belt.
  4. A watch.
  5. Towel/face towel.
  6. Gloves.
  7. Headphones/ earphones.

There are more accessories that you may need for your training, which you could buy in a sport store near you.

At least now you know what you may need to meet your goals before you start training. Don’t be amused by the beauty of a gym and rush for training you won’t meet your traiing goals.
